Ladies Lunch: Balthazar

Of all the places that people recommended to me to go when we were here the one place that was consistently on ALL of the lists was Balthazar. Luckily it was on many other people’s lists too so when we decided to get together for a ladies lunch in NYC on a Thursday afternoon we decided on Balthazar. Yay!

We arrived and soaked up the beauty of the French bistro interior. Best we have a glass of French then no?

Old fashioned food displays.

Ladies perched by themselves at the bar having a champagne and some parfait. SO ladylike.

One hot agent who was in hot neon orange jeans – see Rob? They ARE cool. OK, maybe on hot, younger women than me, but I can try!

And a chance to catch up with some old friends who I hadn’t seen in a while, and make them laugh. She needed it.

I’ve been making her smile all week.

There were no real options for me of what to eat – it HAD to be Steak frittes with Bearnaise right?

This salad…the signature salad…may well have been the best salad I’ve ever had.

The place was buzzing! Filled to the brim with people having lunch. On a Thursday. In Soho. As you do.

Bloggers tend to Instagram the shit out of a whole lot of stuff.

And why wouldn’t you when there was the sweetest creme brulee to get stuck into?

And! THE best coffee that I have had this trip. The coffee has been bad and this coffee was very, very good. Woke me right up from the Sancerre haze I was in. America? Why your coffee so bad?

It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon with some great work colleagues in this great city.

  9. Not sure where you’re getting your coffee but we have some great coffee in nyc! Look for places that serve Oren’s Daily roast, Stumptown and Blue Bottle – all great coffee!

  10. Yes, it is sad but true…American coffee is not the best.
But there are plenty of places in NYC where you can get a good coffee.
The easiest is probably Le Pain Quotidien…a chain of French bakeries that do legit coffees including cafe au lait.
And there are actually quite a few Aussie coffee shops scattered around the city…Ruby’s and Tuck Shop are a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

In other news I am jealous of your Balthazar meal…you ordered exactly what I would have ordered!

  11. Your photos Beth are just so friggen awesome. You’ve really captured every little bit of magic in NYC!

I feel your pain. I’ve lived in the States for over twenty years. Americans make a big fuss about coffee, and they don’t know what a good cup tastes like!

  13. What a beautiful lunch, everyone all dolled up and looking lovely… and that divine food! The salad did look mighty fine. Great pics lady xo

  1. […] a good bottle I was sold. I embraced the Sancerre in NY whereby I ordered a MAGNUM of the stuff at lunch at Balthazar and every chance I read a wine list that has a good selection of French wines in there I will try […]
