Just call me Bev: Date loaf

When I heard that Maxabella was planning on a road trip down south I just knew that she just had to pop in for a cuppa either on the way down or back up and what do you know? She was kind enough to accept {much to her mother’s dismay that she was meeting someone she met online}. Thank goodness it’s not just my Mum that panics about that! I excitedly said that I would bake, which meant that I actually had to bake, so I did. Just that. I baked! I found this recipe on Naughty Shorts blog earlier in the week and knew I had to give it a go at some stage – this was the perfect excuse.

Date Loaf
4 cups of pitted dates {chopped}
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups boiling water
120 grams butter
3 and a half cups self raising flour
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
2 teaspoons baking powder

This makes 2 loaves (one to eat, one to freeze and or, eat)

: Chop the dates into smallish sizes. I ended up using a whole 500gm packet.

: Add dates, butter {cut into small squares} sugar into a large mixing bowl

: Pour in boiling water & vanilla essence and mix until butter melted and all combined

: Add in the sifted flour and baking powder

: Mix until combined

: Pour into lined loaf tins. Somehow I owned 2(!) of these tins even though I have never made a loaf anything before!
: Throw into 180 degree oven for 30 minutes

: Have with tea {it’s OK Rob, it’s just hot water that she’s having}

: And with lashings of butter

: And with good company – of course!

  4. I can attest that the date loaf was delish (and moist, very moist). And how excited was I to be sitting in “the chair”? Did it embarrass you a little when I kept raving on about feeling like I was on a movie set? I’ve just been immersed in your gorgeous house completely via your blog and then… there I was! Bit giddy with it all.

    Thank you both for a lovely morning, such a fabulicious start to my trucking adventure. x

Glad you 2 got to meet. Love Maxabellas comment re movie set and sitting in THE CHAIR (btw I love that chair). And Mrs Woog – your comment is a classic. Babymac I think you need to start a series. Like the old Salon days. You can have people over to tea and entertain and then tell us all about it on your blog. PS Love the Bev posts where you get in touch with your inner-CWAness.

    I made this and it was amazing. Modified it slightly by adding tea instead of water. I did! And it was good. Keep turning out the good stuff from your kitchen Beth/Bev – we ❤️it!
