Cursing the night time

I’m not going to write a lengthy post on sleep right here at the moment. I’m not going to complain about my 4 year old daughter coming into our bed every single night, or the fact that Harper keeps waking 3 times a night before she eventually goes to sleep or the fact that I was so completely over it all this morning that I thought “FUCK it! I am going to just get up and start the day. And stop pretending we should all be sleeping.” Or the fact that when I did this it was 4.40am which is entirely too early to start the day, especially when everyone else is finally sleeping. I’m just not going to do it. I’m too deep in the trenches. The scars are too fresh. There’s no end in sight. So I just won’t.

What I will do is complain about how my favourite time of the day has now been ruined. Ha!

My quiet time is now riddled with angst and a feeling of ‘doing time’ before I am interrupted first. Who will it be? The baby? The 4 year old? Post children in bed is my happy time. My lounge room my happy place. Lamps on, fire roaring, bad TV on, husband next to me on couch, wine usually in hand. It’s my favourite and my best. How could you not be happy here? And even more so last night because my cleaner had come and the floors had been mopped and were sparkling and clean. Bless the cleaner, God Bless her world.

Sure, this will pass. My cold will get better. The baby’s teeth will cut through and she will get over her own cold. The 4 year old will sleep in her bed. It will get better and the nights will once again be my own. And for fuck’s sake I have a cleaner so what do I have to complain about really?! But, until then, I have a widdle something to make me smile. Do you see him there?

My wascally wabbit arrived! My Heico Rabbit Lamp which I bought myself for my birthday arrived from Larkย and just in the nick of time!

Yes, the perfect distraction for one overtired and decidedly cranky Mama. And seriously, anonymous commenter who thinks my posts about lamps suck, do you really want to cross me today? Really?! YES IT’S ANOTHER POST ABOUT LAMPS. THEY MAKE ME HAPPY. Now. I need a coffee.

Comments

  1. Hi Beth – first time comment from me. This post just made me laugh out loud re anon. Oh and I love your lamp! The Lark site is great – and wow you won the giveaway – well done. cheers Wendy .

  2. Love you, Beth! And I love your new wascally wabbit. Hope you manage to get a good night’s sleep soon. 4.40am is faaaar too early to be up xxx

  3. Honestly, I absolutely freakin’ feel for you.

I was there. My baby woke every 10-20 minutes overnight for 2.5 months, and only slept for 20 minutes at a time during the day.

I hated my husband (how it was his fault is beyond me … but it was), hated my 20 minutes of downtime during the day, hated my greasy hair, hated the fact that I was in trakkies 24/7, hated that I mostly ate processed quick food because it’s all I had time for.

And then, as I told you, we went to sleep school. To say it was life changing is a god damned understatement.

Now my lounge room is that happy place you described at 7pm every night. I love my husband again. I love my ease shiny hair. I love some of the pretty cool meals I’ve had time to whip up. Life’s good ๐Ÿ™‚

Yours’ll be too! This is a stage that will no doubt pass.

And the anonymous commenters, what the? Why event comment if it’s just nasty.

Your blog is awesome. And something in blogging land I honestly look forward to.

Hope you have a good night’s sleep soon!

  5. Beth, just wanted to let you know I love your posts about lamps and I love your lamp collection too! Hope you get some sleep soon – I hated the bad sleep times with my kids so much!!

  6. I love lamp!

  7. LOVE LOVE LOVE the lamp!! I had a toy rabbit as a kid that looked just like it!!

Hope the sleeping situation resolves itself soon. I know that the best thing to do it take them directly back to their own bed and make them stay there … but in the middle of the night I just can’t will myself out of bed to make it happen. Be strong, sleep will come.

  8. I love a good lamp and am partial to a good lamp post too! Blog on and may a restful night come to you soon. The evenings from 7pm onwards are my happy place too, even if i am cooking, washing floors and ironing – I need to get me a cleaner goddamn it!

  9. I was where you were a couple of weeks ago and it sucks. More than anything. In the end I used extreme bribery while it hasn’t cured the problem (they both climbed into my bed at different times last night) it has improved.

I hope you get past this very, very soon. x

  10. Children who dont sleep are clearly faulty and need to be put back where they came from to be replaced by new and improved models! I have 3 in this house and my nights generally match yours – although I point blank refuse to start my day at 4.40!

And anonymous lamp commentors should be severely punished with a night of babysitting small non-sleeping children!

I hope you get your coffee today via a constant drip!

  11. Do you break into Bright Eyes everytime you look at it?

Very cool lamp now off to check out this Lark website. Do I send you the bill if I do major damage?

  12. we’ve got the squirrel lamp in the boys room, love it !

  13. Hope ur girls ease up on u soon. No sleep sucks. I feel your pain. I must say your house is amazing. Love it. Keep the pics coming!!

  14. That sucks. But on the up your place looks amazing and that lamp is super special! My favorite time of the day is when the kids are in bed and i am on the couch with wine in hand. its the best. wish i had some awesome advice for you, but i am sure you have tried everything re sleep.. and you know it will pass eventually.
Hope your day is getting brighter and you get to nap at some stage..
    x jody

  15. Ah theres your secret behind the clean house hey? : )
Lamp is awesome, anon don’t even think about it, she has sick small children, don’t mess with her.

  16. Lark can do no wrong in my book. I just finished a post about that fine, find place (not sure when I’ll publish it, I am entirely enjoying my hiatus) ANYWAY, I don’t know why I’m rabbiting on (like?) about Lark when what I really wanted to say was ‘fuckin non-sleeping children stealing our time’. That was it. x

  17. PS – wish I had more anonymous commenters. Amusing. x

  18. just a small observation, each time you say “fuck’ in a post, the punters go crazy. I’ll have to try it.

hope you can drink red wine in silence at some point today (it’s never too early)

    xo em

  19. This too shall pass.

    It’s just a phase I’m sure.

The lamp rocks! My MIL just bought one in the shape of a daschund, it is rather amazing!

    xx

  20. Wow, this was just like reading my own thoughts. Oh and anonymous commenter, I LOVE posts about lamps. The more the better.

  21. Oh! {{Hugs}}. There is nothing good about sleep deprivation, and preschoolers who don’t know which bed is theirs. We have a little girl who got croup last night, which made her sound like a tiger in labour, and I am SO irritable today. Trying really hard not to snap. Hope you get some sleep soon.

  22. LOVE the lamp. Very Alice in Wonderland!
Our 18 month old is a rotten sleeper, he wakes 3 times a night usually – 11-ish, 1-ish, 4-ish. I feel your pain. I am a zombie. But I am grateful for the few hours between 8 and 11 that are mine. I wish we didn’t need that “me” time and could go to bed at 8pm, but we do huh? Hang in there. x

  23. hi i just started reading your blog a couple of weeks ago, i love it! your new do is great and i love your new lamp and for all the mums and dads out there that have the same trouble with sleepless kids please go watch this!!!! a friend sent it to me and is hilarious!!!! not an actual childrens book just a good laugh for parents at their wits end.
    enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Have you seen that fab book lady, “Go the fuck to sleep!”?? I think of it every time I read one of your posts or status updates. Come to think of it, I think of it every night when I’m battling ‘someone’ to go the fuck to sleep!
Your place is looking spiffing. A cleaner?? You clever, clever chick. I was wondering how you would keep that beauty spotless like you do ;o) xo

  25. Last night was my shittest night’s sleep since newbornland. And he’s nearly 15 months. NEARLY 15 FREAKING MONTHS. There never has been ‘sleeping through’.

We were doing wakeups every 90 minutes. Parental hell. I was positively HANGING to drop him off at daycare today. Hanging, I tell you.

    I feel you. Totes.

  26. Trust me one day you will wish for this time again….but for now keep drinking that wine!!! xx

  27. Sorry Baby Mac that comment was from GTV Diaries….don’t know why my google account said About Us….Sorry x

  28. I totally feel for you … lack of sleep just sucks. My kids sound exactly like yours – My middle child wakes at 3 am every night. Every night – what is up with that???
Anyway, I hope it improves quick smart.
    Your lamp rocks
    Your new hair is fantastic
and a cleaner …. well that is just bloody wonderful!

  29. first you buy *my* biker boots,.. then you buy *MY* painting,…and NOW YOU BUY MY LAMP!!!!! Seriously,…dude! Sooo defriending you!! (BTW – my youngest child did not sleep for any longer than 40mins for the first 2 years of his life. sometimes it could take up to 5 hours to get him to go back to sleep in the middle of the night. I feel like crying just remembering those long nights.) feel your pain xxx

  30. Hey sleep deprivation is not fun but it will pass and you will get your bed back, just not now. Love the lamp and by the way, what product does your cleaner use on your floor boards to make them look so amazing. Mine look like crap.

  31. Hahaha @mama of two boys, that’s the link I shared a reading of “GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP” by noni hazlehurst one of the old playschool people. It’s hilarious!!

  32. love this post beth. love the lamp. i dream of a cleaner. i wish you some sleep very soon!

  33. I am having similar sleep problems, bought (and love) the same lamp, and go to the hairdresser tomorrow… freaky…
